New EU Bus Luggage Rules Starting 2026
The EU is standardizing luggage rules for intercity buses: what changes and how to prepare.
What's Changing
From January 1, 2026, unified luggage rules take effect for all international bus routes in the EU. Previously each carrier set its own limits — now there's a standard.
New Allowances
- Cabin bag: 1 bag up to 7 kg, max 40×30×20 cm — free
- Hold luggage: 1 piece up to 20 kg, max 80×50×30 cm — included in ticket
- Extra luggage: €5–15 per piece depending on carrier
Special Items
Bikes, skis and musical instruments now have separate rules. Folding bikes must be accepted free; full-size bikes max €10.
Lost Luggage Compensation
New rules set minimum compensation of up to €300 per piece for lost or damaged luggage.
How to Prepare
- Check your bag dimensions — many backpacks exceed cabin limits
- Weigh luggage in advance — stations will start checking
- Keep your boarding pass — it confirms compensation rights
